Case History
The Parish Church of St Mary,
Winton had a very ancient and worn pipe organ which was of no
particular historic merit. The tracker action was difficult to play
and there was an awkward triggered swell.
The Parochial Church Council
and Organist decided to investigate the possibility of a digital
organ and went to visit various different suppliers. Mary different
solutions were suggested one even being to place the speakers on the
west wall.
Anthony Bogdan Organs were
consulted and Anthony listened carefully to a brief of the churches
requirements. The sound of the pipe organ remarkably 'got out' from
the pipe chamber, which was in the south transept. Anthony decided
to adopt the attitude 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' As the
church is lofty but the sand stone is quite reflective and it was
decided to use six manual speakers and a Viscount Bass Unit for the
pedal division. Another part of the brief was not to remove any
pipework. The best course of action was to place the speakers on top
of the swell box, high up, to give the sound reflective surfaces and
use the organ chamber for that purpose which it was designed
The organ was installed as I
have described and on the 4th March 2011 the organ burst into
life and the church was filled with an amazing organ sound.
Anthony then spent a day
voicing and regulating the organ to fit the building. There is
another session planned soon. St Mary Magdalene Church is looking
forward to a great Festal Easter Day.
More recently (September
2011) the organs operating system was upgraded from 1.4 to 1.5 and a
transformation could be heard. Because Physis is a software based
system the organ will never be out of date.
