St Thomas Purston had a very
small pipe organ built by Peter Conacher and was moved from
Easingwold Methodist Church by to St Thomas's in 1971. Walkers were
contracted to do this work. The organ was too small for the building
and its position on the north side of the chancel meant the sound
just could not get out.
Fr Nicholas Clews and organist Mr Les Blanchard started the search
for a replacement. After realising that any re-building or extension
to the pipe organ would be completely outside budget they turned
their attention to digital organs. After several makes were
investigated and a contract for a Viscount Prestige 40 was placed
with Anthony Bogdan Organs.

"That was tough!!" Anthony voicing after
installation |
The installation was no mean
feat. It had been decided that the six speaker be hung on the west
all thirty feet in the air, and the console be placed where
the old pipe organ was on the North side of the chancel.
The long cable runs were complete and a local
firm contracted to erect the scaffolding. The installation took
three days. Finally the
organ was voiced note by note and set on speech by Anthony Bogdan
using the latest Viscount voicing software

A wonderful sound
now fills the church, the
majestic sound of the full swell.
Les Blanchard insisted on a chimney
flute which he uses to good effect
The tonal palette
is the new viscount sound,
unashamedly English. With crisp
strings a solid diapason chorus
topped off with silvery mixtures, a
creamy clarinet all under pinned by
a substantial pedal division.
The folk or
Purston cum Featherstone are pleased
with the new music and tone colours
the organ has brough to their
worship
